  As a pharmaceutical research enterprise we regard the development and optimisation of pharmaceuticals and therapies as our main field of operation. Individual life quality of the diseased is  the main focus for us.

In order to achieve these goals as many as 400 researchers and scientists are employed in our company every day. sigma-tau operates a total of 5 company-own research centres in different countries.

Our research work includes a large number of fields of therapy. One of our central issues is the chemical and pharma-biological exploration of carnitines. Carnitines are substances existing in nature. Their application for the correction of bio-chemical and metabolic defects that are the cause of a number of diseases is continuously explored and researched at sigma-tau.

With our experience and knowledge we have been operating in the fields of therapy listed below for many years:

• Cardiovascular disorders and diseases (heart and blood vessel system)
• Metabolic disorders
• Disorders and diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system.

Between 2000 and 2005 as many as 141 patents in these fields were granted to sigma-tau.

During the last year our fields of operation were extended by:

• Oncology (carcinology)
• Diseases of the auto-immune system.

  Another area that is of particular importance to us is the exploration of rare diseases. For economic reasons the so-named “rare diseases” are only rarely part of systematic research and development work and therefore there is often a lack of targeted therapy measures for the people affected.

sigma-tau actively targets and performs research for therapeutic solutions in this field.

Current successful results of our research:

In collaboration with the not-for-profit organisation MMV (Medicine for Malaria Venture) two pharmaceuticals have been developed for treatment of malaria (tropica) the most widespread and most lethal form of malaria. These drugs will save the lives of millions of people.
